The Temple of Vesta

The Temple of Vesta was an important ancient Roman temple dedicated to Vesta, the goddess of the hearth and home. Located in the Roman Forum, it was circular in design and housed the sacred flame that symbolized the vitality and safety of the city. The temple was tended by the Vestal Virgins, a group of priestesses who maintained the flame and took vows of chastity. The fire's continuous burning was believed to protect Rome; if it went out, it was thought to be a bad omen. The temple represented both domestic and civic stability in Roman society.
