The Hospitallers
The Hospitallers, officially known as the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, were a medieval Christian military order founded around 1099. Originally established to provide care for sick pilgrims in the Holy Land, they evolved into a formidable military force during the Crusades. They managed hospitals, offered medical assistance, and protected Christian territories. The order became known for their distinctive black cloak with a white cross. After losing their territories in the Holy Land, the Hospitallers relocated to Malta, where they continued to play a key role in Mediterranean politics and defense until their eventual decline in the 18th century.
