The Cultural Revolution

The Cultural Revolution (1966–1976) was a period in China initiated by Mao Zedong to preserve communist ideology by removing perceived capitalist and traditional influences. It involved mass campaigns, propaganda, and upheaval, targeting intellectuals, officials, and cultural institutions. Many people were persecuted, schools closed, and classical traditions attacked. The movement caused widespread chaos, social upheaval, and economic disruption, ultimately leading to a significant loss of life and cultural heritage. It ended with Mao's death in 1976 and a shift towards modernization and reform.
