Swaminathan Commission

The Swaminathan Commission, officially known as the National Commission on Farmers, was established in India in 2004 to address the challenges faced by farmers, such as poverty, declining income, and agricultural sustainability. Chaired by Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, a prominent agricultural scientist, the commission aimed to rejuvenate the farming sector by recommending policies for fair pricing, debt relief, and access to technology and resources. Its goal was to improve the livelihoods of farmers and ensure food security, while promoting sustainable agricultural practices for the future. Its findings have influenced agricultural policy discussions in India since its inception.
