Superfund
Superfund is a U.S. federal program established to clean up some of the nation’s most contaminated land and protect public health and the environment. It was created in 1980 by the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA). The program identifies polluted sites, assesses the risks, and initiates cleanup efforts, often involving complex processes to remove hazardous substances. Superfund is funded by a mix of government and responsible parties' contributions, ensuring contaminated areas are restored for safe use and to prevent future environmental harm.
