Special Counsel
A Special Counsel is an independent attorney appointed to investigate potential wrongdoing, particularly in cases involving public officials or government agencies. Unlike regular prosecutors, a Special Counsel operates outside the usual hierarchy of the Justice Department to avoid conflicts of interest. Their goal is to conduct impartial investigations into matters such as political corruption or legal violations. The Special Counsel can gather evidence, issue subpoenas, and, if necessary, recommend charges, reporting their findings to the Attorney General or a designated authority, ensuring accountability and transparency in sensitive legal issues.
