South Pole-Aitken Basin

The South Pole-Aitken Basin is one of the largest and oldest impact craters on the Moon, measuring about 2,500 kilometers (1,550 miles) in diameter and 13 kilometers (8 miles) deep. Located on the far side, it's believed to have formed from a massive asteroid impact around 4 billion years ago. This basin provides scientists with valuable insights into the Moon's history, geology, and potential resources. Studying it can help us understand not just the Moon's formation, but also impact processes and planetary evolution in our solar system.
