South Pole

The South Pole is the southernmost point on Earth, located on the continent of Antarctica. It marks the geographic location where Earth's meridian lines converge in the southern hemisphere. Situated at about 2,800 meters (9,200 feet) above sea level, the South Pole experiences extreme cold and long periods of darkness in winter. It's a key site for scientific research, especially on climate change, glaciology, and astronomy. Unlike the North Pole, which is an ocean covered by ice, the South Pole sits on a thick ice sheet atop solid landmass. It serves as both a geographic landmark and a hub for scientific exploration.
