Shinran (founder of Jodo Shinshu)

Shinran (1173–1262) was a Japanese Buddhist monk and the founder of Jodo Shinshu, a major sect of Pure Land Buddhism. He emphasized reliance on Amida Buddha's grace for salvation rather than one's own efforts, teaching that even those with deep flaws could attain enlightenment. Shinran's approach encouraged inclusivity and made Buddhism accessible to all, regardless of social status or knowledge. His writings, especially "Kyogyoshinsho," articulate the importance of faith and the recitation of the Nembutsu ("Namu Amida Butsu") as a means of expressing gratitude for Amida's compassion. His teachings continue to resonate, influencing millions today.
