sexual selection theory

Sexual Selection Theory, proposed by Charles Darwin, explains how certain traits evolve not just for survival, but to attract mates. These traits can include physical attributes, like bright feathers or elaborate courtship behaviors, which signal strength or health. There are two main types: intersexual selection, where one sex (usually females) chooses mates based on desired traits; and intrasexual selection, where individuals of the same sex compete for access to mates. This theory highlights how mate preferences and competition can shape the evolution of species, leading to diverse and sometimes extravagant adaptations.
