Sargon II
Sargon II was an ancient Assyrian king who reigned from 721 to 705 BCE. He is known for expanding the Assyrian Empire through military conquests and for establishing a strong administration. Sargon II is particularly noted for his campaign against Israel, leading to the fall of Samaria and the exile of its people. He built the new capital, Dur-Sharrukin (modern Khorsabad), characterized by grand palaces and impressive art. His reign marked a high point in Assyrian power, but it also set the stage for challenges that would later affect the empire's stability.
