Republic of Ragusa
The Republic of Ragusa, also known as the Dubrovnik Republic, was a small, independent city-state located on the Adriatic coast in modern-day Croatia. Established in the 14th century, it flourished through maritime trade and diplomacy, becoming a significant cultural and economic center. Known for its impressive walled city, Ragusa maintained neutrality during regional conflicts, allowing it to thrive. Its government was a unique oligarchy with elected officials, promoting a blend of democracy and aristocracy. The republic lasted until the late 18th century when it was absorbed by the Austrian Empire. Today, its capital, Dubrovnik, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
