Postpartum Hemorrhage
Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is excessive bleeding following childbirth. It occurs when a woman loses more than 500 milliliters of blood after a vaginal delivery or more than 1,000 milliliters after a cesarean section. PPH can happen due to various reasons, including uterine atony (the uterus not contracting properly), retained placental tissue, or injuries to blood vessels. This condition can lead to serious health risks, including shock and even death if not treated promptly. Treatment typically involves medications to help the uterus contract, fluid replacement, and sometimes surgery. Recognizing the signs early is crucial for effective management.
