Postherpetic neuralgia
Postherpetic neuralgia is a painful condition that can occur following an outbreak of shingles, which is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. After the initial shingles rash heals, some people experience ongoing nerve pain in the affected area. This pain can be severe and may last for months or even years. It can feel like burning, stabbing, or aching and may be accompanied by sensitivity to touch. The risk of developing postherpetic neuralgia increases with age. Treatments are available to help manage the pain, but some individuals may have lasting discomfort.
