Plan B (contraceptive)
Plan B is a type of emergency contraceptive pill that can be taken after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure to prevent pregnancy. It contains the hormone levonorgestrel, which works by delaying ovulation, altering fertilization, or preventing a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus. It’s most effective when taken within 72 hours after intercourse but can work up to five days later, although effectiveness decreases over time. Plan B is available without a prescription at pharmacies and is not intended for regular birth control use. It does not terminate an existing pregnancy.
