Levonorgestrel
Levonorgestrel is a type of hormone used in certain birth control methods. It works primarily by preventing ovulation, meaning it stops an egg from being released during the menstrual cycle. It can also thicken cervical mucus to make it harder for sperm to reach an egg, and it may slightly alter the uterine lining, reducing the chance of pregnancy. Levonorgestrel is found in emergency contraceptive pills (like Plan B) and some regular contraceptive methods such as implants and intrauterine devices (IUDs). It is most effective when taken as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse.
