penile prosthesis
A penile prosthesis is a medical device surgically implanted into the penis to help men with erectile dysfunction achieve and maintain an erection. It typically consists of inflatable cylinders placed inside the penis, a pump located in the scrotum, and a fluid reservoir. When a man wants an erection, he activates the pump, which moves fluid into the cylinders, causing them to expand. This creates rigidity needed for sexual intercourse. There are also malleable rods that can be adjusted manually. Penile prostheses are usually considered when other treatments for erectile dysfunction, like medication, have not been effective.
