Osmotic agent

An osmotic agent is a substance that helps draw water into or out of cells and tissues through the process of osmosis. In medical contexts, it's often used to relieve pressure or swelling, such as in cases of kidney dysfunction or to prepare for surgery. When administered, these agents create a difference in concentration that causes water to move, which can help balance fluid levels in the body. Common examples include mannitol and sorbitol, used in various treatments like reducing intracranial pressure or managing certain types of edema.
