Oscar López Rivera

Oscar López Rivera is a Puerto Rican nationalist and former member of the armed group FALN (Fuerzas Armadas de Liberación Nacional Puertorriqueña), which sought Puerto Rican independence through violent means. He was convicted in 1981 on charges related to terrorism and conspiracy and spent 36 years in U.S. federal prison. Lopez Rivera became a symbol of the Puerto Rican independence movement, with advocates arguing for his release as a political prisoner. In 2017, President Barack Obama commuted his sentence, and he was released, allowing him to continue his activism for Puerto Rican rights and independence.
