Abolitionist movement

The Abolitionist movement was a social and political effort in the 18th and 19th centuries aimed at ending slavery and the transatlantic slave trade. Activists, known as abolitionists, fought against the inhumane treatment of enslaved people and advocated for their rights and freedom. Prominent figures included Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, and William Lloyd Garrison. The movement mobilized public opinion, led to the formation of anti-slavery societies, and ultimately contributed to the passage of laws, such as the Emancipation Proclamation in the United States, which declared freedom for enslaved people in Confederate states during the Civil War.
