Order of St. John (Knights Hospitaller)
The Order of St. John, also known as the Knights Hospitaller, is a medieval Catholic military order founded in the 11th century. Initially established to provide care for sick and injured pilgrims in the Holy Land, the order evolved into a chivalric organization that defended Christian territories and fought in the Crusades. They became known for their distinctive white cross on black cloaks. Over time, their focus shifted from military endeavors to humanitarian work, including hospital care and medical services. Today, the modern successor, the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, continues their legacy in charitable activities worldwide.
