One Country, Two Systems
"One Country, Two Systems" is a principle allowing Hong Kong and Macau to maintain their own legal systems, currencies, and customs while being part of China. This arrangement was designed to preserve their unique identities and economic systems after their return from British and Portuguese rule, respectively. It enables these regions to operate with a degree of autonomy, particularly in areas like legal courts and business laws, while still recognizing China’s sovereignty. The goal is to balance national unity with regional stability and economic freedom, though in practice, the level of autonomy has sometimes been a subject of debate.
