Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)
The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) is an international agreement aimed at preventing the spread of nuclear weapons and promoting peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Established in 1968, it has three main goals: to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons (non-proliferation), to encourage disarmament among existing nuclear-armed states, and to promote the peaceful use of nuclear technology. The treaty recognizes five nuclear-armed countries (the U.S., Russia, China, France, and the UK) while encouraging others to refrain from developing nuclear weapons. It fosters cooperation and dialogue to enhance global security and reduce the risks associated with nuclear arms.
