Nigerian political history
Nigeria's political history is marked by colonial rule, independence, and military coups. Gaining independence from Britain in 1960, Nigeria initially embraced democracy, but soon experienced a series of military dictatorships, with coups occurring in 1966, 1975, and 1983. Civil conflict, including the Biafran War (1967-1970), challenged national unity. The 1999 return to democratic rule marked a significant change, leading to elections and civilian governance. Despite ongoing issues such as corruption, ethnic tensions, and security challenges, Nigeria remains a key player in Africa, striving for stability and democratic growth.
