Narcissus (mythology)
In Greek mythology, Narcissus was a beautiful young man who fell in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. Enchanted by his image, he could not leave it, ultimately leading to his demise. This myth serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of excessive self-love and vanity, now commonly referred to as narcissism. Narcissus's story emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and balanced self-regard, warning against becoming so engrossed in one’s own image that one neglects external relationships and reality. His name has since become synonymous with extreme self-absorption.
