Motivated Cognition
Motivated cognition refers to the way our beliefs, desires, and emotions influence how we process information and make judgments. Essentially, people often interpret facts and evidence in a way that aligns with their existing views or feelings. For example, someone might selectively remember information that supports their opinions while disregarding contrary evidence. This can happen consciously or unconsciously, leading to biased thinking and decision-making. Motivated cognition helps explain why people cling to certain beliefs, even in the face of conflicting information, as it reinforces their emotional needs or personal interests.
