Lucretius

Lucretius was an ancient Roman poet and philosopher who wrote "De Rerum Natura" ("On the Nature of Things"), a poetic exploration of Epicurean philosophy. He argued that the universe is composed of tiny, indivisible particles called atoms, and that natural phenomena can be explained without invoking gods or supernatural forces. His work emphasizes that understanding the natural world can reduce human fears about death and the divine, promoting a life of reason, curiosity, and enjoyment. Lucretius's ideas laid early groundwork for scientific thinking and helped challenge superstition in favor of rational inquiry.
