longlining
Longlining is a fishing technique that uses a main line, called a backbone, with multiple baited hooks attached at intervals. This method allows fishermen to catch various fish species over a large area. Longlines can be set both in deep and shallow waters and are typically either anchored or drifted. While effective for catching fish, longlining can also unintentionally capture non-target species, including seabirds, turtles, and sharks, raising concerns about environmental impact and sustainability. Regulatory measures are often implemented to mitigate these bycatch issues and protect marine ecosystems.
