Longline Fishing Techniques

Longline fishing involves deploying a single, continuous line—called a longline—that can stretch several kilometers. This line is equipped with numerous baited hooks distributed at intervals, targeting species like tuna and swordfish. The technology allows fishermen to efficiently catch large quantities of fish with minimal gear, reducing habitat disturbance. The longline is usually floated at specified depths, and can be set near the surface or deeper, depending on the target species. While effective, longline fishing raises concerns about bycatch—accidental capture of non-target species like seabirds, sharks, and other marine life—prompting ongoing efforts to develop more sustainable practices.
