Know Nothing Party
The Know Nothing Party was a U.S. political movement in the mid-1850s, primarily composed of nativists who opposed immigration, particularly from Catholics and foreigners. Formed in response to the increasing number of immigrants, the party aimed to protect American interests and promote native-born citizens. Members often answered questions about their activities with "I know nothing," leading to the party's name. The Know Nothing Party had significant influence in some regions but ultimately declined due to internal divisions and the rise of new political issues, particularly surrounding slavery, leading to its dissolution in the late 1850s.
