14th President of the United States
The 14th President of the United States was Franklin Pierce, who served from 1853 to 1857. A Democrat from New Hampshire, he took office during a period of growing tensions over slavery. Pierce supported the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which allowed new territories to decide on slavery, leading to violent conflicts known as "Bleeding Kansas." His presidency faced criticism for not effectively addressing these divisions, and he struggled with public support. After leaving office, Pierce's reputation declined, and he became less involved in politics. He is often remembered for his role in the lead-up to the Civil War.
