King of Afghanistan
The King of Afghanistan refers to the monarch who formerly ruled the country before the establishment of a republic and subsequent conflicts. Afghanistan had several kings, notably Zahir Shah, who reigned from 1933 to 1973 and is often recognized for modernizing efforts. The monarchy was overthrown in 1973 by a coup, leading to political instability and civil war. Afghanistan later became a republic, and the title of king is now largely symbolic. The last king, Zahir Shah, returned to Afghanistan in 2002 but did not regain power, opting instead to support a democratic process.
