Khankendi

Khankendi, also known as Stepanakert, is the capital city of the self-declared Republic of Artsakh, a region in the South Caucasus. This area has been the subject of conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan since the late 20th century, primarily due to ethnic and territorial disputes. Khankendi is predominantly populated by ethnic Armenians, but its sovereignty is not internationally recognized, as it is considered part of Azerbaijan. The city has faced significant political and military tensions, especially during the Nagorno-Karabakh conflicts. Today, it remains a focal point for discussions surrounding the unresolved status of Artsakh.
