Kanun-i Esasi

The Kanun-i Esasi, established in 1876, was the first constitutional law of the Ottoman Empire. It aimed to modernize the state by introducing a parliamentary system and guaranteeing certain rights to citizens, like freedom of speech and the protection of property. The document marked a significant shift from absolute monarchy to a more representative government. Although it faced challenges and was suspended multiple times, the Kanun-i Esasi laid the groundwork for future constitutional developments in Turkey and helped influence the broader transition towards modern governance in the region.
