John Phillips

John Phillips (1800-1874) was a notable English geologist, often regarded as one of the founders of modern geology. He is best known for his work on the classification of rocks and fossils, which helped to map Earth's geological history. Phillips also made significant contributions to understanding the age of the Earth and the processes that shape its surface. His influential book, "Memoirs of the Geological Survey," and his role as the first person to identify a geological period, known as the "Carboniferous," marked important developments in the study of Earth sciences.
