Janata Party

The Janata Party was an Indian political organization formed in 1977 as a coalition of various opposition groups opposing the Indian National Congress. It aimed to unify diverse political factions to challenge Congress’s dominance, especially after the Emergency period (1975-77). The party brought together socialists, former Congress members, and regional leaders. It achieved a significant victory in the 1977 general elections, leading to the first non-Congress government at the national level. The Janata Party's formation marked a major shift in Indian politics, emphasizing coalition-building and regional representation, although it eventually dissolved or evolved into other political entities.
