International Meridian Conference
The International Meridian Conference, held in 1884 in Washington, D.C., aimed to establish a standard system for global timekeeping and navigation. Delegates from 25 countries agreed to set the Prime Meridian at Greenwich, England, where longitude is defined as 0 degrees. This decision helped standardize time zones and facilitate international communication and trade. The conference established a framework for using a uniform system of time based on the Earth's rotation, enhancing global cooperation and coordination in an increasingly interconnected world. Thus, it laid the groundwork for the modern timekeeping system we use today.
