International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI)
The International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) is a global framework aimed at standardizing the way we classify food and drink textures for people with swallowing difficulties, known as dysphagia. It provides a clear set of guidelines and a numbering system from 0 to 7, defining different consistencies—from thin liquids to solid foods. This ensures that healthcare providers, caregivers, and patients use the same terminology and understand food preparations, which helps reduce confusion and improve safety and nutrition for individuals with swallowing challenges.
