Inclusion Body Myositis
Inclusion Body Myositis (IBM) is a rare muscle disease that causes progressive weakness and muscle wasting, primarily affecting older adults. It primarily targets the muscles of the arms and legs, making everyday activities challenging. The condition occurs when the body's immune system mistakenly attacks muscle fibers, leading to inflammation and damage. Characteristic features of IBM include the presence of abnormal "inclusion bodies" in muscle cells, which can be seen under a microscope. Unlike other muscle diseases, IBM typically progresses slowly and is often resistant to treatments, making managing symptoms and maintaining function crucial for those affected.
