Hypoventilation Syndromes

Hypoventilation syndromes are conditions where a person breathes insufficiently, leading to an inadequate exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. This can result in elevated carbon dioxide levels in the blood (hypercapnia) and decreased oxygen levels (hypoxia). Common causes include obesity, certain neurological disorders, and respiratory diseases. Symptoms may include fatigue, confusion, shortness of breath, and in severe cases, can lead to respiratory failure. Treatment focuses on improving breathing, which may involve lifestyle changes, respiratory therapies, or the use of devices such as CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machines to assist with breathing during sleep.
