Central Hypoventilation Syndrome (CHS)
Central Hypoventilation Syndrome (CHS) is a condition where the brain's respiratory control center doesn't send proper signals to breathe, especially during sleep. This causes insufficient breathing, leading to low oxygen and high carbon dioxide levels in the blood. Unlike lung diseases, CHS is related to the nervous system's regulation of breathing. People with CHS may require ventilatory support, such as a ventilator, especially at night. It can be congenital (present from birth) or acquired later in life due to brain injury. Proper management is essential to ensure adequate oxygenation and prevent complications.
