Hot and Cool Media

Hot and cool media are concepts introduced by Marshall McLuhan to describe how media engage our senses. Hot media are high-definition, immersive, and require less audience participation—for example, film or radio—delivering detailed content that fills our senses. Cool media are low-definition, more interactive, and demand more viewer involvement—such as television or comics—often relying on the audience to fill in gaps. Essentially, hot media provide richer sensory input, while cool media are more participatory, encouraging active engagement and interpretation from audiences.
