Henro (Pilgrims)
Henro refers to pilgrims who walk the Shikoku Pilgrimage in Japan, a traditional route of 88 sacred temples associated with the Buddhist monk Kōbō Daishi (Kukai). Spanning approximately 1,200 kilometers, the journey attracts both spiritual seekers and hikers. Pilgrims often wear white clothing symbolizing purity and carry a staff and a kyōkai (bowl) to collect donations. The pilgrimage emphasizes reflection, personal growth, and connection to nature and culture, making it a profound experience for many. The route offers a mix of rural landscapes, ancient temples, and opportunities to engage with local communities.
