Hanford Site
The Hanford Site, located in Washington State, was established during World War II as part of the Manhattan Project to produce plutonium for nuclear weapons. It operated several nuclear reactors and processing facilities until the 1980s. As a result, it became one of the most contaminated sites in the U.S., with significant quantities of radioactive waste. Currently, efforts are ongoing to clean up and manage the environmental impacts of its past activities. The site represents both the historical significance of nuclear development and the ongoing challenges of managing nuclear legacies safely.
