Gurukul

Gurukul refers to an ancient Indian educational system where students lived with their teacher, or guru, in a communal setting. This system emphasized not only academic learning but also moral and spiritual development. Students, known as shishyas, learned various subjects including philosophy, mathematics, and the arts through direct interaction and practical experience. The relationship between the guru and shishyas was often very close, fostering a deep sense of respect and learning. Gurukuls were fundamental in shaping the cultural and intellectual traditions of India, promoting holistic education and lifelong learning.
