Gnaeus Julius Agricola was a Roman general and governor of Britain in the late first century AD. He is best known for his military campaigns that expanded Roman control over much of what is now England and Wales. Agricola also promoted Roman culture and governance among the local tribes. His life and achievements are documented by his son-in-law, the historian Tacitus, who portrayed him as a model of Roman virtue. Agricola's efforts laid the foundation for Roman influence in Britain, contributing to its integration into the Roman Empire. He served from 77 AD to 85 AD before returning to Rome.
