Giani Zail Singh was an Indian politician who served as the 7th President of India from 1982 to 1987. Born on May 5, 1916, in Punjab, he was a prominent leader in the Indian National Congress party. Before his presidency, he held various political positions, including Chief Minister of Punjab. Zail Singh was known for his close association with Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and played a significant role during a tumultuous period in Indian politics, including the Emergency era. His presidency was marked by efforts to maintain communal harmony and address regional issues. He passed away on December 25, 2004.
