George William Gordon
George William Gordon (1820–1865) was a prominent Jamaican political figure and a key leader in the fight for civil rights during the 19th century. As a member of the House of Assembly, he advocated for the rights of the island’s marginalized populations, particularly the formerly enslaved. Gordon is perhaps best known for his role in the Morant Bay Rebellion of 1865, where he sought justice for social injustices. His subsequent arrest and execution highlighted the oppressive colonial system in Jamaica. Today, he is remembered as a martyr for the cause of freedom and equality in the Caribbean.
