Fecal Microbiota Transplantation
Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT) is a medical procedure that involves transferring healthy bacteria from a donor’s stool into a patient's gut. The goal is to restore a balanced and diverse microbiome—the community of microorganisms living in the intestines—which can help treat infections like recurrent Clostridioides difficile (C. difficile). By reintroducing beneficial bacteria, FMT can improve gut health, reduce symptoms, and help prevent further infections. It is typically performed via colonoscopy, enema, or a nasal tube. FMT is considered effective and generally safe when done with proper screening of donors.
