Ergot

Ergot is a fungus that grows on certain grains, particularly rye. When these infected grains are consumed, they can cause a range of health issues, known as ergotism. Symptoms may include muscle spasms, hallucinations, and in severe cases, gangrene. Historically, ergot played a role in various outbreaks of illness, particularly in the Middle Ages. Interestingly, ergot is also the source of compounds used in modern medicine, including treatments for migraines and to induce labor.
